STORY

Named for the hour it keeps.

In Hongdae a night usually ends because the room closes, not because you're done. Saebyeok is a Hongdae Pub built the other way round.

  1. CHAPTER 01

    The name is the closing time.

    Saebyeok is the hour just before sunrise. It is also, literally, when this place closes — 4am the next morning every day except Saturday, and on Saturday not at all, because it runs a full 24 hours. We wanted a Hongdae Bar you don't have to leave when the last train goes, or when the second round turns into a third.

  2. CHAPTER 02

    Not bar snacks — a proper meal.

    Ten of the twenty-eight dishes on the board are stews — the largest section on it. Mille-feuille nabe, seafood soft-tofu, boneless samgyetang with scorched rice: things you would happily eat as dinner. So from opening through the evening this is a Hongdae Restaurant people come to for a meal, and after dark the exact same dishes become what you drink over. That is why there is only one menu, not a lunch one and a late one.

  3. CHAPTER 03

    The makgeolli is made here.

    Strawberry, omija and yuzu, made in house and poured in 1L or 500ml — the three the board groups under 手工 makgeolli. Beside them sit four fruit sojus, five highballs, and a shelf of coco-ades and teas with no alcohol in them at all. A Hongdae Pub should still have something on the board for the person who isn't drinking.

  • How late are you open?

    Until 4am the next morning every day except Saturday — and on Saturday we don't close at all, running a full 24 hours. Doors open 11:20 Mon–Thu, 11:10 Friday, and 11:00 on Saturday and Sunday. If you're looking for a Hongdae Bar that runs late, check the last-order time below too.

  • Can I make a reservation?

    Yes — by phone on 0507-1386-7092, or through Naver booking. Give us the date, the time and how many of you there are. For public holidays or larger groups, a phone call ahead is the surest way.

  • How do I get there from Hongik Univ. Station?

    About a 4-minute walk — roughly 230 m in a straight line. Hongik Univ. Station is served by Line 2, the AREX airport line and the Gyeongui–Jungang line; from there walk down Eoulmadang-ro toward the university's front gate and look for the timber-fronted building that uses both the ground floor and the floor below. From Line 6, it is about 13 minutes on foot from Sangsu Station.

  • Is there a menu in other languages?

    Yes. The boards in the room are printed in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese together — both the food board and the drinks board. A mixed group can order off the same board.

  • Is it fine to come alone?

    Yes. One stew and a 500ml bottle makes a complete table for one. Sides start at KRW 7,500, and the makgeolli and fruit sojus come in 500ml as well as the larger bottle, so drinking on your own doesn't mean committing to a litre.

  • What if someone in our group isn't drinking?

    Not a problem. There are four coco-ades and three teas — omija, honey grapefruit, plum — at KRW 5,000 for 300ml, plus alcohol-free beers including Heineken 0.0% and Tsingtao 0.0%. And the food stands on its own as a meal without anything to drink at all.

  • Do you have room for a larger group?

    The shop uses two floors — the ground floor and the one below — so seating is split across several areas. Whether a particular size and time can be seated does vary, so please call ahead for a group. On the day itself, a phone call is the most reliable answer we can give.
